I am the son of the Gas engineer whose war time memories I have copied. At the time I was a pupil at Falmouth Grammar school and remember sleeping and sheltering in our Anerson shelter,
in the back garden of our home in Melvill Road.
The only time the school closed due to enemy action was when the oil storage tanks were hit, behind Swanpool. What sticks in my mind about this was walking by the stream near the site and the sickly sweet smell of burnt oil. Falmouth had more air activity than might be expected of such a remote location - of course the docks were a prime target.
