I am Northampton born and bred and lived in Baring Road, Northampton with my parents and brothers, Geoff and Brian (Britten)
I was aged 11 when war broke out and about to start high school education at Northampton School for Girls.
My elder brother Geoff (Britten) was a GPO Engineer and after the Coventry Blitz of November 14th 1940 was sent with others to repair damage to communications. He was very shocked at what he saw and later on he volunteered for the RAF. He was trained as a pilot in Arizona, USA. When he promised to send his love to our non existent Uncle Sam we knew where he was going!
Northampton was quite lucky and didn't suffer many air raids, in fact we seemed only to have stray bombs dropped which we surmised were what the Germans were getting rid of on their way back home.
Like everyone we avidly followed the course of the war and rejoiced greatly when first the Germans and then the Japanese surrendered.
