When war was declared I lived at Ramsgate in a Regency terraced house overlooking the harbour.

We had a telescope on the balcony which was used to watch all the harbour activity and all the comings and goings at sea - The Downs -surrounding the Goodwin Sands.

Ramsgate harbour was manned by the Royal Navy and we had Navy Officers billeted on us. One of these was involved in the attempted rescue of a destroyer which hit a mine off Margate - I think it was The Kelly.

Another memory was the sight of the small ships coming back from Dunkirk, with all the relief agencies setting up food, medical and welfare facilities around the harbour.

Eventually our house was uninhabaitable through bomb damage and we moved out to Ash, Nr, Sandwich for the rest of the war.
