My father died some years ago - 1983 to be precise - but after retirement, he began to write his autobiography and although it remained unfinished at his death, he did record his wartime experiences, first as an ARP Warden in his home town of Coulsdon and then working with the RAF's Photographic Intelligence unit at Medmenham in Buckinghamshire.
I had dipped into these memoirs from time to time but only recently did I decide to read them from start to finish. What emerges from his writings are, in particular, some interesting insights into the work of photographic reconnaissance, an aspect of wartime activity that still seems to me to be under-represented in coverage of the war years.
The stories are told in his own words, taken from his memoirs, although I have carried out some slight editing.
