I think Iwas the youngest Air Raid Warden as I joined the Civil Defence in 1942 and took the courses to become a Warden, passed the tests and went to the Town Hall to be sworn in. The Army Officer stamped the back of my ID card to enter personal details and when he asked my dob I told him- 18,3,25. He said I should be 20, not 17! No-one had told me that and I had never been asked. He decided that as I had passed the couse, he would accept me anyway. Eileen Kirby nee VICKERS, I lived at 37 South End Croydon., my father was Chris Vickers and he had a sweet shop there.
