Audrey: I was with Harry's mother at the village school where we were having a big celebration because it was VE day. We were dancing in the street, the music was playing, flags were flying, the whole village was there! Harry's mother, Violet, who I knew through glove-making classes, said her son, who was an rear air-gunner in the RAF, was coming home. Just as she said that, he walked down the road. Violet said, "Do you know my son, Audrey?" And I said "Vaguely, from youth club days". We had a few dances together and then left the celebrations as he was tired and wanted to go home. Harry walked me home as it was on his way!

Shortly afterwards, Harry was posted to Nottingham University Air Squadron, and as I worked in Nottingham, we ended up travelling on the same bus everyday. We became good friends. When Harry came home on leave we went to the village dances together and started courting!

We became engaged and eventually got married on Saturday 24th September, 1949.

Harry remained in the RAF and we travelled to different stations throughout our marriage, until he retired in 1975. To celebrate his retirement we went on a round-the-world cruise for three months! It was a holiday of a lifetime.
