It was a lovely sunny day in 1942, when my Mum was on her way home from work, when the air-raid siren went.On the other side of the road was a young woman who called across to ask my Mum if she was going to shelter in the Stations shelter. My Mum said that she would sooner take her chances and knock on someone's door and shelter with them.As she thought that shelters near stations were almost, definately targets. So this young woman asked if she could join my Mum. So the pair of them knocked on the door of a big houde in shortlands, which turned out to be owned by Doctor Coltart and his wife. My mother explained that her and the young woman who was with her had just met by chance and would both feel safer sheltering in the Doctors celler. The Doctor was very pleased to hear this and so they went to the celler with the Doctor and his wife. Unfortunately a week later the Doctors house had been sliced in half, the half where they had all sheltered still stood but the other half was gone. It was about another 3 weeks after that, that my Mum had learned that the Dear Doctor Coltart and his lovely wife had been called urgently to Devon where their 2 children were evacuated to as one of the children was very ill and on their way the train that the Doctor and his wife were on either crashed or was hit by a Bomb. My mum would still like to know if the young woman she sheltered with is still around today and what really was the cause of the Young Doctor and his wifes death. My mum is now 84years old.
