During the war I (Bill Newton) was a pupil at Balshaw's Grammar school Leyland. We were trained to be plane spotters for the ARP. One Sunday afternoon my Dad (Alec)and I were in the garden and I said that is a German plane, he laughed and said don't be silly. Suddenly anti-aircraft fire opened up. The German plane veered away from it's assumed target of Leyland Motors and discarded bombs over Lostock Hall. Tragically, one fell on the table of a family as they were eating their afternoon meal, and they were all killed.
