As a little girl during the London blitz I remember very little of the bombs. My mother felt it was paramount to keep the home together and rejected the idea of being evacuated. With my father fighting the war in the army all decisions were made by my mother. With this in mind towards the end of the war, when the air raids became to much to bear we spent each night sleeping on the underground, the location was nearest to Muswell Hill-N10. I slept at the bottom of a black iron bunk bed, which was a novelty to me. We had the same beds each evening. At the end of the platform was a window where refreshments could be purchased, this was run by the WRVS. My one joy as a small child was my first taste of swiss roll. I had never tasted cake before, particularly with jam! The squeels of delight from me precipitated the ladies in the canteen to save me a piece each evening, I have never forgotten this pleasure. There was a very warm community atmosphere and a sense of comraderie. The one downfall of sleeping on the underground station however, was the noise of the tube trains throughout the night which disturbed my sleep! My mother did a good job in keeping us safe physically and emotionally, in essence these were happy memories and ones which I will treasure forever.
