I was born at Home in 1943 at Crabtree Rd, Botley, Oxford. In my very early years three Bombs were dropped where we lived, one in Crabtree Rd and two in adjoining roads of Maple and Hawthorne Close.
The Bombs did not explode for whatever reason and I think were dropped by the RAF by mistake. The Bombs missed the Houses and fell in the back gardens of the properties. One of the Bombs fell in to the garden directly across the road from us and damaged Sheds only.
About two miles away from our home at a location called 'Yarnells Hill' there Housed an Italian Prosoner of War Camp and some of the Prisoners were marched down to help dig the Bombs out. Apparantly the digging out of the Bombs took many months to complete.
My Mother made reference to the Bombs dropping for many years after as Oxford was a safe place to live at the time owing to some sort of agreement with Germany.
I wondered if anybody else who lived in the area remebers the 'Dropping of Bombs' in Botley. To this day I know the exact location where they fell.
I now live about six miles away from where I was born in Botley, if anybody is Interested where the bombs fell I can show them.
A J Robinson.
