My name is Grace Young ( nee Church) born 3/6/23 so I was 21 years old. I was supposed to get married on 1/7/44 but the invasion put paid to that and I finally got married on 23/2/45 - my husband's first leave from Europe. He was in the RAF When this took place I was living in Parson's Green, Fulham.

During the war I worked for the London Divisional food office - a section of the Ministry of food. We were based in Saville Row when I joined in 1942. We then moved to Burlington House and then on to Cork St. where we had 2 buildings.

We had a rota for all night fire-watching which we all had to do. On the night of June 15th 1944 a colleague and I were on the roof (with tin hats on). We then saw a plane approach us overhead which seemed to be alight. We felt very chuffed thinking it was a direct hit on an enemy plane and stood there cheering.Of course we were wrong: it was a flying bomb, the first we had seen. The Government hadn't told us about them but that of course was the first of many we encountered and ran from.
