Wedding Bells After 5 Day Romance for HMS Barham survivor. 27th May 1944
George Robert Marshall survived the sinking of HMS Barham on the 25th November 1941. During this time he was writing to his sweetheart Joyce Sharpless from Gateshead on Tyne. George was familiar with Gateshead as he was born there, but he had never met Joyce. They only knew each other as George's friend had a sweetheart who knew Joyce and they arranged for the two to write to each other. A few years passed by and on Tuesday May 23rd 1944 George and Joyce met for the first time. Five days later they married on Saturday 27th May at the church of Venerable Bede, Gateshead. This was a whirlwind romance which lasted until 1982 when Joyce sadly died.
