Wedding of Mr James & Mrs Daphne Coombes 08.08.1941.at a church in Hampton near Hampton Court Palace.
My name is Roland the youngest son of Jimmy and Daphne Coombes. My parents first met in 1941 at a public house in Hampton, now in Greater London. My mothers younger sister Betty worked as a barmaid in the pub and on the night my parents first met my mother arrived at the pub and saw Betty talking to a group of British soldiers. My mother said "Betty stop talking to those common soldiers." To which my father replied,
"Who are you calling common." Not an auspicious first meeting, but my parents started dating and were married later that year.Like so many British couples they married quickly because of the uncertain future caused by the war.Later in the war my mother was walking in Molesey when a jeep carrying American soldiers appeared, the soldiers began to whistle and shout, when my mother ignored them, one soldier said,"Leave her sarge, that broad will only talk to officers."The local American soldiers later christened my mother,Ginger Rogers, after the movie star.
