I was called up in late 1941 in Eastbourne in the ATS. I was Batwoman to the officers for about 2 years and after that I had to go on a cooking course which I passed and I was then posted up to Paisley in Scotland. My Dad, Arthur Ashby, was still posted at the Bury St Edmunds barracks with the Suffolk Regiment as Sargent Major.

In Paisley I was cooking meals for the Sargents Mess where I met my husband John who was in the Royal Engineers. He had just returned from North Africa. Six weeks later we got engaged ! We married in 1946. I completed another 2 months in the ATS and then I was released as I was married.
