A camp performance of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. There were one or two professionals among the internees, one of whom was a certain Mrs Thompson. The ladies designed all the stage set and props and the camp commandant condescended to attend the performance with his aide. They kept a straight unsmiling face throughout.
Miss Thompson was a bit of a Prima Donna who I suspect never quite made it as a big-time screen actress. I have since caught sight of her in one or two films as a face in the crowd or as a cloakroom lady. But in the camp she brazenly commandeered a toilet cubicle for herself and got a craven friend of hers to hold a towel up to shield her from public gaze. A dislikeable woman.
Then there was a Miss Elliot — a tall, dark beauty. She later married the cabinet minister Hore Belisha. Among other notorieties was Mary Booth, daughter of the Salvation Army founder. She always wore her uniform and imbued us with good thoughts. We said w didn’t care if we misbehaved because she had taught us that God was our best friend.
