I left school at 14 and went Hafordinous Hall,Llangerniew, with the intention of becoming a gardener, howver I left to start an apprenticeship as a locksmith.As I didn't think i had the patience to complete this training I then went to work for Redlline glyco in Rhyll. About two weeks before war was declared a sealed package was delivered to the depot where I was working , it was marked to be opened only in the event of the declaration of war. On the Sunday morning , September 3, 1939 , the three staff at the depot. The package was opened by the manager and it contained instuctions for the amalgamation of all the petrol companies to be operated as on ecompany under instruction from the government.This was known as the Petroleum Board.Detailed instructions for each employee and the mixing instructuions for the existing petrol stocks for a grade of petrol to be known as 'Pool'were included.
