As a child, just turned 14, I watched the small boats going across the Channel and returning to Folkestone, during the first days of Dunkirk. Then, on June 2nd, I became an evacuee, waiting on Folkestone's Central Station. It seemed an eternity, but we didn't mind, as news had spread, of course, that the trains coming up from Folkestone Marine, and Dover Marine station were packed with the troops off these small boats. When our turn came to entrain, it was the beginning of a 4-year acquaintance with Dowlais, near Merthyr Tydfil! After the first few months, we were allowed home for the holidays, as it was considered that though tragic, it was not so important if a whole household were killed, it would not be the disaster that a whole generation was wiped out.
