huntingdon was surrounded by airfields american and RAF ,mostly bomber stations. As a kid,I was born on the first of January 1938,I remember the yanks. as they were known as. They seemed to be everywhere in town ,then a sleepy country town with one small main street . many americans would sit beside the river ouse or sit on the wall ouside the fish and chip shop. They would give us kids fish and chips ,we would also cadge gum from them "got any gum chum" was usually successful and often they would give us gum and sometimes other candy unsolicited. They were all very young, I wonder today how many made it back home as the bomber crews casualty rate was very high.
