The first memory my mum told me about was, one day she was coming home from school on a Sammy Ledguard`s bus, a single decker, from Potternewton PD school, when the mother of one of the pupils getting off at North lane got on, and said the war was over, and she said everybody screamed, and some cried.
Another one was about when Bramley got bombed, mum was really upset because she had to stay in the air raid shelter, but her older brother Harry, was allowed to go looking for shrapnel after the bombs had dropped, on the Long fields and top of the Greenthorpe estate near where they lived.

Mum`s family were also recruited to have evacuees, along with anyone else who had room to spare. Her brother Harry was in the Royal Navy at the time so they had one room . They got part of a family, a mother and daughter, and their neighbours, who lived across the gardens had the two sons from that family. Her mother fed all the family though because she had the ration allowance for all four.
