This is one of my Mothers memories who unfortunately has passed on: It would have been during the summer of 1943 or 1944 and she was in the kitchen of Pine Cottage, Pineham when she heard a stuttering roar of an air craft, she rushed out and looked up and saw a USAF Flying Fortress which was very low, so low she could make out the faces of some of the crew. The bomber was crippled and flying on one engine a Spitfire was accompanying the crippled plain flying around it urging it on. Suddenly the engine stoped and and there was only the growl of the Spitfires engine then an almighty crash. The Flying Fortress crashed into Huntley's (local farmer) field at the back of Dane Cottage, killing all of the crew. Mothers lasting memory is of the rear guners face, it was imprinted in her memory and she could always see him in her minds eye till she died in 2000.
