I was seven years old and although I am now seventy, I can still remember the terror I felt when I heard the announcement on the radio. I expected German troops to come marching into the coal-mining valley I lived in at that moment. This dread continued for some time and was particularly noticeable if the German National anthem was audible to me. My daughter when told of my reaction to the music, said"Now I know why you often say "THe allies should have made a change of national anthem as part of the peace settlement"
