No. 03— HMS Quail early 1943 working up at Scapa Flow, mined entering Bari harbour Italy November 1943. In which a few minutes saver my life. Mined under the stern, I’d just taken steering engine reading and returned to gear room. In the great Bari disaster including mustered gas.

No. 04 — Tommy Russell 19 years old class of 1939. Training division, I applied for swap to Fleet Air Arm as a gunner but was turned down as I had completed my engine room training, was disappointed but was lucky as casualties was high in the Norwegian campaign. I was told you were lucky to survive three operations.
