In 1943, I had a young daughter, she was a six months old. We were walking along Dyke Road, and I heard the bombers come over - they were aiming for the Viaduct on London Road. Luckily they missed but unluckily the bomb landed in Bath Street.

As the planes head back, they started to machine gun people in the street. The bullets were going here, there and everywhere - luckily not in our bodies, but a couple did land in the pram. I stood there petrified, and luckily someone pushed me and the pram into the shop door way. There was quite a drop into the shop and the pram when dowm 'bonk', the baby started screaming. It was close call but we were both safe and sound. My daughter's now 61 and I'm 83!
