I'm trying to trace my grandfather (my mother's father) who was an American GI based in Cheltenham during WW2. Like many other people I've read about on this site, I don't have much information to go on but this is what I do have:
My grandfather's name was Michael or Mike Rohan and he came from the Bronx area of New York. We know his family were Catholics of Irish decent and that he possibly served with the military police. He was repatriated back to New York in December 1945 and he knew about the birth of my mother. He even sent the air fare for my grandmother and mother to go and join him back in America but due to family pressures here they never went.
We have already contacted the Military Personnel Records offices in St Louis however they failed to find any record of Mike - we were advised however that this may have been due to the fact many of the records were destroyed in the fire there.
If there is anyone out there who can provide any advice on where we should go next with our search then I would be grateful. For example is there any way I can find out which branches of the American military were based in Cheltenham during the war or where the American military police were based?
Many thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.
Gwyn
