SUN TUG 5
----------
Sunk in the Thames by a magnetic mine on the
21\12\1940, off the coast of Sheerness.
----------------
With the loss of Sidney Swaisland age 23 yrs Crew Member. Buried by the Admiralty in Sutton Road Cemetary, Southend-on-Sea.
------------------
His name is recorded on the plaque at Tower Hill Monument for Merchant Seaman, who gave their lives during the 1939\1945 war.
--------------------
My uncle had just returned from Dunkirk carrying out evacuation work, and was about to be relieved duties by another member of the crew when the Sun Tug was due to return to the coast of France.
My uncles friend told us that Sidney said, 'I will do your shift, you have got a wife and children', he then went on to say,' that it looks a bit thick out there, you get off home'. he then went below deck, and that was the last his friend saw of him.
The Sun Tug sailed off at the appointed time, and was blown up as mentioned above.
I can supply A4 photographs of my uncle on the Sun Tug 5 if required.
