0. When Germany overran Poland, he was 'Landed-Gentry' civilian and promptly interned in some internationally-monitored internment camp called Ausswitz! Spent 6-months there, 6-weeks of which in 'solitary' (by the way).
1. Released as harmless, he lived as a civilian for another couple of years until Germans ran short of manpower; conscripted into ZBV (special-forces) he found himself in Italy acting as a forward-lines cartographer.
2/3. As Germans retreated, was captured by Americans but after short POW term was put through a course in English and served with US-army.
4. Transferred to Polish Corps of British army, then demobbed in Glasgow.
So .... interned, 4 different armies, stayed alive!
Togo died some 22-years ago and in his personal letters I found and had translated one which basically told him not to return to Poland (for fear of being shot!). Last year I discovered a half-brother of mine and we met in Krakow (he's 10-years older than me).
