I remember going to Sheffield on the day of the Blitz to buy a dress and coat for my wedding in early January, the coat I left to be shortened.
That night, when the sirens went, my family and neighbours next door, who shared the Anderson shelter, went into the damp, fusty, refuge huddled in our warmest clothes.
On hearing the next day Sheffield had taken a battering, I thought ‘There goes my coat’. Fortunately I got my coat, the shop (I can’t remember the name) had not been too badly damaged so I didn’t have to go in and old one, which was great as the day was bitterly cold.
