Sunday 20th October 1940
For many weeks my Dearly Beloved Husband would come in from business and ask " can I volunteer for the RAF, would you mind if I did?". We had 2 sons and expecting our third baby, how could I answer my loved ones request to volunteer, although he was in a reserved occupation. Finally love of our Country had won after weeks of his requests. That fatefull day 20th October 1940 arrived. We made our way to Midland Station, Nottingham, the train duly arrived and we had to say our goodbyes. The train pulled out on its way to Yatesbury to our waves and regrets, travelling down the track the train seemed to stop, we wanted to go down the line to fetch him back.
On leaving the station I decided we couldn't go home so I took the boys down to Trent Embankment, sitting by the River Trent until we were bitterley cold, finally getting a tram back home to New Basford. On arriving home the silence was deadly and the boys watching to see if I was crying I quickly switched on the wireless to overcome the heartbreak. This was the 1st time I ever had heard Vera Lyne singing We'll Meet Again. That was between 5pm and 6pm that Sunday afternoon 20th October 1940. Vera had been our inspiration from that day on. Now after 70 years of a wonderful happy marriage (apart from the FIVE and HALF YEARS of war)we have come to part, loosing my Loved One George in September 2004 but Vera poignantly sings We'll Meet Again to me as I say Good Night and God Bless - knowing We Will Meet Again.
Thanks to Vera Lyne and the composer of this lovely song that carried us through those dark days. We are grateful for the happy years that followed but grieve for those who lost their loved ones.
Mrs Doris Hart age 91years.
