Sand and Gravel supplies for the War effort in Fermanagh

Mrs Florence Telford aged 91 who lived at Aughyoule Derrylin, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland during the war years clearly recalls the opening of a sand quarry by her late husband Victor on their farm. He supplied sand to airforce projects at St Angelo and Ely Lodge near Enniskillen. American soldiers transported the sand in large dark blue (?) trucks.

There were as many as 16 men employed from the locality to dig out the sand and gravel, screen it and shovel it manually into the trucks as there was no machinery in the quarry at this time. The local men were delighted with the employment and as one former employee later said “It was my first regular job on a weekly wage.”
