This is not so much a story as a personal recollection of VE day. I was 9 years old and had been back in London for several months, braving the V2 bombs. We had been living in Middx was not terribly safe either. I do remember my parents allowing me to stay up in the evening and we walked from Earls Court to Buckingham Palace, which I thought was a dreadful long way. I needed to go to the toilet and as we couldn't find a Ladies my father stood guard outside while I went in the Gents. This made a lasting impression on a 9 year old as you can imagine. The crowds outside Buckingham Palace were enormous but my father lifted me up so that I got a good view of the royal family on the balcony - and of course Winston Churchill. Golly I was really tired when I eventually got home - but it had been worth it!
