The coming of World War II precipitated our quiet agricultural village into the 20th century.
Apprehension about the future was mixed with excitement for the village boys as many outside influences were thrust upon us. Evacuees arrived bringing culture shocks to both sides, most of the young men of the village were called-up and uniformed strangers appeared from the various military camps set up in the neighbourhood. The men who remained formed the Home Guard, Air Raid Wardens or joined the Royal Observer Corps. Village housewives took on land work to replace the men who had joined up.
During the early years of the war the village was gripped by fear of invasion and German spies. When the night bombing of the industrial Midlands started in 1940 we found ourselves in the flight-path of German bombers droning overhead.
The full story of how the war affected the village is on our community website www.wood-ditton.org.uk/war1.htm
