My godmother Dorothy Taylor (single woman) worked on the telegram service thru the war and until she retired. I always remember her saying to me not to think that war was exciting and glamorous for everybody as in the cinema. She remebered going to work on telegrams and then there would be a blitz and the shift would have to find an air raid shelter, take cover wait for the all clear, then they would come out only to go straight back to work with no wash or change of clothes, sometimes it could be days before they could get back home and sort themselves out. She preferred peace time.
