We lived near Kempton Park Race Course, which had been transformed into a huge Prisoner of war camp for Germans, these prisoners came straight from the battle fronts of Europe, here they were "sorted out" and P.O.W uniforms issused. All former uniforms and equipment were disposed of at an old Council Tip near Sunbury Cemetery, this tip was continuoulsy burning.
For some of us youngsters the temptation to explore this dangerous area and find military memorabilia such as leather belts and buckles, badges, buttons, mess tins, boots etc was overwhelming.
The Police visited the school on a number of occassions warning us to keep clear of the site, but to little avail.
Eventually a huge pit was dug in Kempton Park for the remainder of this rubbish - but it was still treasure to us!!!
