My father was in charge of Camp 37 containing Italian prisoners of war. He had a generally cordial relationship with them.
One night 3 of them escaped. However, having found life "outside" particularly difficult they returned to the camp 3 nights later and broke in to rejoin their compatriots inside.
Having been discovered at the morning roll-call they were hauled up before my father. With a twinkle in his eye he charged them, not with actually escaping, but with breaking back INTO the camp as the punishment for that offence was more severe!
The prisoners, collectively, got their revenge which will form the basis of another story soon.
