Lily was married with a very young son at the start of the war. She lived in the east end of Sheffield on Forncett Street, near Saville Street.
Her husband joined the army, and the very first night he was sent away, Lily’s house was bombed out, and they were homeless. The neighbours were very kind and rallied round, and they took in Lily and her young son Roy. The neighbours who looked after them were very kind, and because Lily’s son was so young, they used to go out and queue up for rations for them. They would often be gone hours and hours.
After the War, her husband came out of the army, and they moved to a new estate with a garden and a kitchen!
