During the many bombing raids made on London, my late grandmother lived in the East End of London in West Ham and my late mother was paying her a visit.

Unfortunately the back half of my grandmother's house had been blown away in a bombing raid, the night before my mother's visit. The windows in the house were the old sash type. While my grandmother was showing my mother the damage to her house, the next door neighbour came out into the garden. My grandmother did no more than raise the sash window to say that Mabel was visiting - and there was still glass in the window!
