Whilst in the Boy Scouts during the war we were trying to earn our ” National Service” Award
By erecting Morrison Shelters in some Almshouses in Hammersmith (West London). These were steel tables that would offer some protection if the house collapsed.
We had almost completed one when the air raid warning sounded and a V1 flying bomb could be heard.

We three brave lads dived under the table and told the elderly lady resident to come with us.

She bent down , looked at us and said “ Gawd, I could never get down that far. I’ll go and make you all a cup of tea.”
