Being so close to London we heard and saw plenty of activity during the war. Even more so as we were only three/four minutes walk from Bushy Park which was home to many USA and Canadian troops. You don't need to know this but my Dad was a Canadian soldier he and my mother had a wartime romance as very young people and then he returned to his own country and I stayed and lived with my lovely Nan and Grandad various aunts and some uncles too at least the ones who were not part of the war at the time.
When the end of the war came - one magical evening when I was about three years old - my family trooped to the top of Connaught Road as the street lights had been put back on. I can vividly remember saying to my Nan ..this is fairyland Nanny.. and she replied of course it is. Life was never to be that simple again.
It is January 2nd.2006 May I wish you all a very happy New Year
