My father Arthur Holland, known to his workmates as 'Pat' Holland, drove freight trains during the war, so was in a reserved occupation. He worked out of Sheffield and surrounding train depots (e.g.Intake). Sheffield was heavily bombed during the war because of the steelworks and coalmines in the area.
My fater told me that on journeys from the city he and his fireman often had to take the decision to shelter the train in tunnels until the air raids were over in order to protect the valuable supplies they carried.
