During World War II I was employed as a draughtsman working on full scale layouts followed by jig and tool design for the manufacture of aircraft.
The factory had been heavily bombed and most of it had to be rebuilt. This was still going on while we were working.
Some of us used to whistle "Deutshland uber Alles"now and again as it made our section leader niggly. One day I was absently whistling this when one of the outside contractor's men came up to me and said"Do you like that tune?!
"Yes I replied "I think its part of a Haydn
string quartet". !Oh,I didn't know that" he
said and offered me a cigarette. We chatted
for a few moments and then he asked what I was doing followed by a number of questions which I hardly expected from a building worker.
After he had gone I mentioned this episode to several workmates and they all agreed it was a bit suspicious as we were working on
Lancaster bomber manufacture at the time.
Iwas advised to report the matter to the departmental head which I did.
Several weeks later I heard that there had been a number of unexplained failures and
cases of deliberate damage to important electrical components throughout the factory. After my experience was reported the man was watched and followed and turned out to be the saboteur. He disappeared forthwith and nothing more was heard.
