the date was 9th sept. 1940. lincoln house in high holborn had taken a direct hit at 3.23am and many people were trapped inside. he was a volunteer fireman and went to help rescue the people. my father left my mother my two sister and myself stayed in betterdon house shelter. in the morning my mother took me and we ran to high holborn station. the whole of high holborn was ablaze. my mother started to cry she had been told that the plans came back an hour later and a lot of the rescuers were killed. she was told to go to the local mortuary because that was where the bodies had been taken. when my mother knocked at the door of the mortuary a man opened the door and i could see a big box with legs arms and other pieces of bodies. he would not let my mother take me in with her, so i had to go and stay at a school nearby. she did not find his body and it was not found until sept 15th.
