At the beginning of the war my mother, brother and younger sister were evacuated to Somerset. My father was in the ARP so he had to stay at home. We returned to London in 1941 and were living in a flat near Kennington Park. My father was with the ARP in a school nearby and was on duty during an air raid. Incendiary bombs had been dropped on one of the blocks of flats near us so his commander sent him to check that we were ok, whilst he was away the school took a direct hit and many of his colleagues were killed. My father was then transferred to another school in Faunce Street just of East Street. He never spoke very much about what he had seen as for most of the war he was on the heavy rescue squad.
