This is the story of how my Grandmother and Grandfather met for the first time on VE day. This short story is in my Nan's words and was written for the 50th anniversary of VE Day, for a magazine (it was published!). My Grandad sadly passed away in January 2004 so this story is a treasured memory for my Nan which I know she wants to share.
'My brother was one of the hundreds of soldiers who had to swim from Dunkirk, fortunateley being picked up by one of our vessels. His pal, however, was wounded and, of course, captured for the duration.
In due course my brother found out where his pal was sent to and asked if I would write to him. During our correspondence he gave me his home address and his sister and I also wrote.
Eventually May 8 arrived, and I went to see the Royal Family on the famous balcony. It was such a glorious day. When we got home, who should be there but Dick - my borther's pal - and his sister! He'd been released a couple of weeks before after the the Americans had overrun the prison camp.
After a couple of dates, we both found that this was 'it', even though never a word of romance passed between us in our letters. We got engaged in August and married the following April (1946)
We have a wonderful son, a lovely Daughter in law, two super grandaughters and 2 Great Grandchildren, so you can understand the happiness that VE Day started for us'.
