During the war a bomb hit the Ritz Cinema. It was on fire and we watched when a V2 came over — we were sitting on a roof. The next night the man was rewiring film in the projection room when a bomb hit Quarry Hill — the blast knocked him round the room. All the films fell on top of him. A man was walking up the stairs and was blown over. After all of this they just put the film back on again! There was a lot of local damage and injury.

I remember incendiary bombs along Orsett Road one night when we were going home. We helped a local lawyer clear papers and salvage as their office was on fire. We were given 10 shillings for helping!
