During the war some of my family and I used an Anderson shelter during air raids. My father used to stand outside and tell us what was happening — much to my mother’s annoyance!

On one particular night he told us several times that another plane had been shot down because flames were coming from the tail of the said plane. The next morning we learned that the dreaded doodlebug (V1 rocket) had arrived in England.
