Dear diary, Friday 10th 2005,
At school during independent learning week we went back 60 years ago. We dressed, sung, ate rationed food, made gas mask boxes, did a diary extract imagining we were in 1939-1945, made a large collage of words, pictures and textiles on a piece of A2 paper.
On Tuesday (when we started the project) discussed what we could do with a piece of card and some string. We thought we could make a box using a net and use string to hold it (which was right). Then we discussed what we would put in it, We had lots of ideas including makeup, leaves and finally my friend said "a gas mask?". The teachers looked at each other and announced it was correct. It took us a long time to make but fun.
Later that day we got our main task research world war two (how the children our age would have felt about all the things that happened) and on Friday we needed to dress in the style of the time, cook a meal and eat it surrounded by the poetry and artwork we have created and perform a dance/songs of the time. which we all thought it would be very stressful. We split into five groups and each group researched different things. We found out we had to fit into our busy schedule READING A BOOK set in that time. The rest of the day we wrote a diary extract, researched and learnt a dance and songs.
On Wednesday we learnt another dance and MORE songs. Wrote positive and negative words and feelings to do with the war we all found out it was harder to think of positive words and feelings and we found it very easy to think of negative words and feelings and took us a lot longer to create the positive list than the negative list. We discussed what we were going to cook the food and used our mathematical skills to work out the amount of food we could use looking up rations.
On Thursday we sorted out what we were going to wear, created the collage and I nearly ran out of time so i started to panic and we practised our songs and dance.
The final day, Friday. In the morning we went through the dance and songs again. Also we talked to a lady who survived the world war 2 and we were able to ask her some questions we were eager to know one was "what was your scariest moment" the answer was " walking through London during the Blitz". Then we sorted out the place where we were eating with the teachers. We also cooked the food then got into our beautiful frilly dresses and army suit. We ate our lunch with the teachers which all thoroughly enjoyed. After we had eaten we performed our dance and songs in front of all the teachers (and one of them had a CAMERA). We even made one of the teachers cry.
