When war broke out I was 16 years of age I had joined the red cross just to get the oppotunity of a night out. I was called up to go into the red cross and help with the hospitals who were in great need for the forces and people who were in danger of being hurt by the bombing of our country. I settled into the nursing.
After some months I had settled down in my career I lived in Birmingham and my hospital was called Hatton and almost in Warick. I was use to travelling to home by bus or coach but then being a cyclist I decided to use my bicycle to get back from home on one leave. Unfortunatally in those days no lights were allowed in the roads. So starting out early evening I had learned the way through the country lanes but I was alone on an unknown area but I pedealed on feeling I was nearing the hospital.
I felt quite confident on my bike but suddenly in frount of me a large shadow appeared before me. I dismounted and in the pitch blackness felt something large and metallic. I almost screamed but suddenly two men came towards me they came through the dark and I realised they were airmen. They were in a state of panic as both realised I was completely lost.
I told them where I was going, to my hospital. Both men were very worried in case i was found on the air field so carefully the men got me and my bike onto the correct road. They pointed me on my to the hospital. We were very pleased not to be found in this state. I got back to the hospital and was so very pleased to get back both myself and the two airmen were overjoyed not have been caught. I took my bicycle back home on the train when my leave came and never cycled from Birmingham to Warick again.
The following Saturday the men that helped me came to the dance at the hospital. As like another saturday.
