I was born in 1940 in Carlisle. My father was called up to the intelligence corps and had a pretty excting war leaving his war bride in the alien north to run a pioneer community centre which in itself would make a wonderful story. My father had been a professional climber before the war and as a result was given the job of tiring out the Norwegian Quisling Thor Gladd who was then in his custody. The idea was to run him up and down the mountains of Cumbria to wear him out so that he'd be too exhausted to escape. This proved to be a near impossible task, resulting in my father having to sleep with a gun under his pillow...just in case.
Thor Glad had an enormous appetite and my mother being newly married and at that time no cook, had great trouble in keeping the quisling filled up.Being born in the summer of 1940 I of course don't remember the many stories attached to this period of my life except those handed down eventually by my mother. My mother hated the book Gladd wrote "The mirrors of deception" but I am briefly mentioned as the red haired baby.My father also had the pleasure of the company of John Moe but I would have to contact my cousin to get more details of this. The stories of what my father had to do such as testing the security of the docks at Southampton and on public transport were only told to me by my mother. My father,I know at times enjoyed the excitement of his work and tended to keep all things to himself. It was the same with his climbing which was also filled with adrenalin flowing adventures.
