The date was 5th July 1944, my 5th birthday. I was promised a birthday tea with friends from nearby if no air raid sirens had sounded during the day. The cake, made from saved up rations, was sitting on the sideboard.

However this was not to be. The siren sounded, a bomb dropped nearby, our windows were blown out and the roof damaged.

I can still see in my mind the birthday cake decorated with shards of glass.

Our family still owns this house so wartime memories often flood back when I visit there.
