When the War started, I was in a reserved occupation - working at the Royal Small Arms factory in Enfield - and was not called up for military service until later. I can recall cycling home to Harringay - about 7 miles - in the dark because of the blackout. The next morning when cycling back to work, I realised how lucky I had been the previous night, because the daylight revealed that there were three unexploded bombs on the fields over which I had cycled the previous night!
